Wesley So Joins UpGrad Mumba Masters for GCL 2025

Mumbai, 29th September 2025: UpGrad Mumba Masters added star power at the Global Chess League (GCL) 2025 Draft & Auction by signing Grandmaster Wesley So for 270 points. Making his GCL debut, the Filipino-American, known for beating Magnus Carlsen thrice in classical play, joins an already strong core of Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (MVL), Koneru Humpy, and Harika Dronavalli.

The team, led by retained ICON player MVL, now boasts a formidable blend of global and Indian talent. CEO Suhail Chandhok said the team was keen on keeping its core intact while targeting a top male superstar — and succeeded with Wesley So. Indian stars Humpy and Harika, both retained, add proven consistency and experience to the side.

To bolster depth, Mumba Masters also picked Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan, one of the most creative players in the world, along with Iranian teenage prodigy Bardiya Daneshvar. Pentala Harikrishna will captain the squad, marking his first season at the GCL. He expressed excitement about leading a well-balanced roster filled with familiar faces.

With Wesley So’s debut, MVL’s leadership, and the brilliance of Humpy, Harika, Mamedyarov, and Bardiya, UpGrad Mumba Masters will enter GCL 2025 with one of the most exciting squads in the league, ready to challenge rivals and entertain fans worldwide.
