Tatenda Taibu named ambassador for ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026

Former Zimbabwe captain Tatenda Taibu believes the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup continues to be the ideal platform for young cricketers to launch successful professional careers. Taibu, who has been appointed tournament ambassador for the 2026 edition to be co-hosted by Zimbabwe and Namibia, said the event holds a special place in his life and development as a cricketer.

Taibu was named Player of the Tournament at the 2002 U19 World Cup in New Zealand before going on to represent Zimbabwe in 150 ODIs and becoming the youngest Test captain in history at the age of 20. Reflecting on his U19 journey, he said the tournament teaches players to handle pressure while also reminding them to enjoy the game.

“There is pressure because you are playing for your country and everyone wants to perform, but players should not forget to enjoy cricket. You play your best when you enjoy the game,” Taibu said, adding that the memories and friendships formed at youth level stay with players for life.

The former wicketkeeper-batter produced standout all-round performances in 2002, helping Zimbabwe win the Plate competition despite an early group-stage exit. Now head coach of the Papua New Guinea national team and based in the UK, Taibu said he is excited to return home for the tournament and praised the growing passion for cricket in Zimbabwe.

He expects strong local support for matches, particularly in Harare and Bulawayo, and hopes the next generation uses the tournament as a springboard to the global stage.
