Brazil Survive Japan Challenge With Late Martinelli Goal to Enter World Cup Last 16

Brazil booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a thrilling 2-1 win over Japan in Houston. The five-time champions looked close to extra time before Gabriel Martinelli produced a dramatic late winner in stoppage time.

Japan surprised Brazil by taking the lead in the 29th minute. Kaishu Sano capitalised on a midfield mistake and fired a right-footed strike into the net, giving Japan confidence against one of football’s biggest teams.

Brazil responded strongly after the break and increased the pressure. Their efforts finally paid off in the 56th minute when Casemiro scored with a powerful header from a Gabriel Magalhaes assist to bring the match level.

The Brazilian attack continued searching for the winning goal, with Vinicius Junior also creating danger, but Japan goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made important saves to keep his team in the contest.

However, Brazil found the breakthrough in the sixth minute of added time. Substitute Gabriel Martinelli finished the move calmly to seal a dramatic victory and end Japan’s hopes of reaching their first-ever World Cup knockout win.

The result extended Brazil’s strong record against Japan, with the South American side winning 12 of their 15 meetings. Brazil will now face either Ivory Coast or Norway in the Round of 16.

Japan exited the tournament after a strong group-stage campaign, while Brazil continue their pursuit of a record sixth World Cup title.
