Canada Reach World Cup Last 16 After Late Eustáquio Winner Against South Africa

Canada secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa to advance to the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The match looked set to go into extra time before captain Stephen Eustáquio produced a late moment of brilliance.

With the clock approaching stoppage time, Eustáquio struck a powerful volley that found the bottom corner, leaving South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams unable to stop it. The goal sparked celebrations among Canadian supporters in Los Angeles.

South Africa controlled much of the match and enjoyed more possession, but they struggled to create clear scoring opportunities. Canada’s defence remained organised, while goalkeeper efforts and strong defensive work kept the game balanced.

The introduction of Alphonso Davies in the second half gave Canada more attacking energy and helped them put pressure on the South African defence. That increased momentum eventually led to the decisive goal.

South Africa attempted to push forward after conceding but could not find an equaliser, ending their hopes of continuing in the tournament.

Canada’s victory sends them into the Round of 16, where they will face either Morocco or the Netherlands on July 4 in Houston.

The result adds another memorable chapter to Canada’s World Cup campaign as they continue their journey on home soil. Eustáquio’s late strike proved to be the difference in a tightly fought knockout match.
