Jelena Ostapenko and Marcelo Arevalo were crowned the first champions of Wimbledon 2026 after defeating Australia’s Storm Hunter and Marc Polmans 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the mixed doubles final on Centre Court.
The Australian pair dominated the opening set and led by a break early in the second, but Ostapenko and Arevalo mounted a spirited comeback. After levelling the match by taking the second set 7-5, they carried the momentum into the decider, racing to a 3-1 lead before sealing the title in one hour and 56 minutes.
The victory marks Ostapenko’s first Wimbledon title after finishing runner-up in the 2019 mixed doubles and the 2025 women’s doubles finals. For Arevalo, it is a historic achievement as he becomes the first player from El Salvador to win a Wimbledon title. He celebrated the milestone with his wife and son on Centre Court during the trophy presentation.
Reflecting on the win, Arevalo said he hoped his success would inspire young athletes in El Salvador to believe that hard work and determination can make dreams come true. Ostapenko credited her partner’s positivity for helping her stay composed after a difficult start, saying she focused on fighting until the final point to complete a memorable comeback.
