England’s celebrated “Bazball” era has come to an unexpected end after Brendon McCullum was removed as the national team’s Test head coach, just days after Ben Stokes announced his retirement from international cricket.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that McCullum would step down from the Test role, although the former New Zealand captain suggested the decision was not voluntary, saying he respected the board’s choice. McCullum will continue as England’s head coach for the ODI and T20I teams.
McCullum took charge of England’s Test side in 2022 following a disastrous Ashes campaign in Australia. Alongside captain Ben Stokes, he transformed the team’s fortunes with an aggressive, fearless style of cricket that became known worldwide as “Bazball.”
When McCullum assumed the role, England had won just one of their previous 17 Test matches. Under his leadership, the team adopted an attacking approach that revived its performances, produced memorable victories and reshaped modern Test cricket.
