India captain Harmanpreet Singh has set his sights on ending the country’s 51-year wait for the FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup title as the team prepares for the 2026 tournament in Belgium and the Netherlands from August 15 to 30.
Leading India at the World Cup for the second time, Harmanpreet hopes to emulate legendary captain Ajit Pal Singh, who guided India to its only World Cup triumph in 1975. Having already captained the team to consecutive Olympic bronze medals, Harmanpreet believes the current 20-member squad has the right blend of experienced players and emerging talent to challenge for the title.
Drawn in Pool D alongside England, Pakistan and Wales, India will begin their campaign against Wales on August 15 before facing England on August 17 and Pakistan on August 19.
Reflecting on the team’s preparations, Harmanpreet said India’s recent performances in the FIH Pro League have boosted confidence, while stressing the importance of consistency, disciplined defending and converting scoring opportunities. He added that senior players have played a key role in guiding the younger members of the squad.
Speaking about the much-anticipated clash against Pakistan, Harmanpreet said the team must stay composed, control emotions and focus on executing its plans against every opponent.
Addressing Indian fans, the skipper urged them to continue supporting the team, expressing confidence that the players will give everything on the field. “It’s time to end the long wait and create history,” Harmanpreet said, as India aims to lift its first Hockey World Cup trophy since 1975.
