Glasgow, July 31: India’s Lovepreet Singh clinched the silver medal in the men’s +110kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after a closely fought contest on Thursday.
Lovepreet impressed with a flawless snatch competition, successfully completing all three attempts, with his best lift of 176kg. He continued his strong performance in the clean and jerk, lifting 212kg to finish with a total of 388kg.
However, New Zealand’s David Andrew Liti produced a superb final clean and jerk lift of 223kg to edge past the Indian by just one kilogram, finishing with a combined total of 389kg to claim the gold medal. Lovepreet settled for silver after an outstanding display.
The medal was India’s ninth in weightlifting and para-weightlifting events at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, further strengthening the country’s impressive campaign.
Hailing from Bal Sachandar village in Punjab’s Amritsar district, Lovepreet began weightlifting at the age of 13 and rose through the ranks despite financial challenges. A bronze medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and gold medallist at the 2022 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships, he achieved a new personal best total of 388kg in Glasgow.
India’s weightlifting contingent has enjoyed a successful Games, with Mirabai Chanu winning gold, while Rishikanta Singh, Muthupandi Raja, Gyaneshwari Yadav, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Harjinder Kaur, and now Lovepreet Singh have added silver medals. Bindyarani Devi has also contributed a bronze to India’s medal tally.
