New Delhi, August 17: Ayush Shetty’s stunning first-round victory over defending champion and world No. 1 Shi Yu Qi at the BWF World Championships has earned high praise from his coach Sagar Chopda.
Shetty held his nerve in a thrilling deciding game at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Monday, defeating the Chinese star after Shi saved four match points. The Indian sealed the biggest win of his career with a deceptive net flick, changing direction at the last moment to catch Shi off guard.
“I am extremely happy with the way Ayush played that last shot. To play that at that moment speaks volumes of his talent,” Chopda said in a post-match analysis shared by the Badminton Association of India.
Chopda revealed that Shetty had practised and used the shot several times during the match. He also praised the youngster’s defence, net play and composure, particularly against Shi’s varied attacking game.
The coach credited Indonesian coach Irwansyah for helping Shetty tactically, especially with handling high lifts and avoiding unnecessary jump smashes. Shetty’s ability to mix clears and lifts also helped him control the rallies.
Chopda called the victory Shetty’s best win so far but stressed that the job is not finished. He said recovery will now be crucial as the Indian youngster turns his attention to the second round.
Coach Vimal Kumar was also present in the stands and provided valuable inputs during the match.
