Devdutt Padikkal continued his impressive form against Sri Lanka with a brilliant century as India finished Day 1 of the second Test at 300/5 in Colombo.

After winning the toss, India elected to bat but lost KL Rahul for 18 and Yashasvi Jaiswal for 45 in the opening session. Jaiswal looked in excellent touch before Asitha Fernando dismissed him with an inside edge that crashed into the stumps.

Shubman Gill then joined Padikkal and steadied the innings. Gill scored a patient 50 off 108 balls before edging Fernando to the wicketkeeper. Padikkal, however, remained composed and brought up his second century of the series. He scored 117 and played a key role in taking India past the 250-run mark.

Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt after being struck on his left forearm by a short delivery from Lahiru Kumara. The wicketkeeper-batter received treatment from the Indian medical team, with further assessment expected.

Ravindra Jadeja replaced Pant and contributed 43 before falling to Asitha Fernando in the final over of the day. Jadeja had also required treatment after appearing to suffer a finger injury.

At stumps, Dhruv Jurel was unbeaten on 7, while debutant Saransh Jain was on 4. India will look to push towards a big first-innings total on Day 2.

India lead the two-Test series 1-0 after winning the opening Test in Galle by 165 runs and are aiming for a series sweep in Colombo.
