India’s campaign at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 came to an end after a goalless draw against Australia in their final second-round match in Amstelveen, Netherlands, on Sunday.

India needed a victory to secure a place in the semifinals, while Australia only required a draw because of their superior goal tally. The result therefore sent Australia through to the last four.

India survived an early scare when Australia appeared to score from close range. The effort struck Jyoti high on the body before deflecting into the net, but India immediately took a referral. The video umpire ruled the play dangerous, and the goal was disallowed.

India then created an important opportunity shortly before half-time after earning a penalty corner. However, Australia defended the situation effectively and prevented India from converting. Nikki Pradhan also found space but failed to make clean contact with her attempt, which eventually struck her foot.

The Indian team continued to push for the decisive goal after the break, knowing that only a win would keep their semifinal hopes alive. However, Australia’s disciplined defence held firm and India could not find a breakthrough.

India had started the tournament unbeaten, drawing against China and England before recording an impressive 6-1 victory over South Africa. Their hopes suffered a major setback with a 0-2 defeat against the Netherlands in the previous second-round match.

Australia’s draw secured the final semifinal spot, ending India’s World Cup campaign.
