India’s fast bowler Harshit Rana has been reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday. The sanction relates to Article 2.5, which deals with using gestures or actions that could provoke an aggressive reaction from a dismissed batter.
The incident took place in the 22nd over of South Africa’s innings when Rana, after dismissing Dewald Brevis, made a gesture toward the dressing room. Match officials deemed the act inappropriate and a potential trigger for confrontation.
As a result, Rana received an official reprimand and one demerit point—his first offence in a 24-month period. He admitted the charge and accepted the penalty proposed by match referee Richie Richardson, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.
Level 1 offences carry penalties ranging from an official warning to a 50% match-fee deduction along with one or two demerit points. Players accumulating four demerit points within 24 months face suspension from upcoming international matches.
