South Africa delivered a commanding performance to defeat West Indies by nine wickets in their Super 8 encounter of the T20 World Cup 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Thursday. The emphatic victory has virtually sealed a semifinal berth for the Proteas and significantly boosted India’s qualification hopes.
After opting to bowl first, South Africa’s bowlers struck at regular intervals to restrict West Indies to 176/8 in 20 overs. Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi provided early breakthroughs, denting the Caribbean side’s top order. Despite the collapse, a spirited late partnership between Jason Holder (49) and Romario Shepherd powered West Indies to a competitive total with a flurry of boundaries in the final overs.
Chasing 177, South Africa came out aggressively. Quinton de Kock set the tone with a blistering 47 off 24 balls during the powerplay. Skipper Aiden Markram then took control of the innings, smashing an unbeaten 82 off just 27 deliveries, while Ryan Rickelton supported him with a steady 45 not out. The duo stitched together a match-winning partnership, guiding the team to 177/1 in just 16.1 overs.
With two consecutive Super 8 victories, South Africa now sit comfortably at the top of Group 1. West Indies, meanwhile, face a must-win situation in their remaining fixtures to stay in contention for the knockout stage.
