Ahmedabad has officially been granted the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games, following approval at the Commonwealth Sport general assembly in Glasgow. This marks the event’s return to India after 20 years, with the last edition hosted in New Delhi in 2010. The decision confirms the recommendation made earlier by the Commonwealth Sport Executive Board.
Officials highlighted India’s strong case, citing its scale, sporting culture and rapidly developing infrastructure. The move also strengthens India’s long-term aspiration to bid for the 2036 Olympics, with Ahmedabad already emerging as a major hub for international sports events and facilities in recent years.
For the 2030 Games, 15 to 17 sports have been confirmed, including athletics, swimming, table tennis, bowls, weightlifting, artistic gymnastics, netball and boxing, along with their para-sport counterparts. Other disciplines such as archery, badminton, cricket T20, hockey, shooting, squash and wrestling are under consideration, and the host city is allowed to propose up to two additional sports.
Ahmedabad is developing multiple venues for the Games, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave, aquatics centre, football stadium, indoor arenas and a 3,000-capacity athletes’ village. In recent years, the city has hosted major continental events and will continue to do so ahead of the 2030 Games, positioning itself as one of India’s premier sporting destinations.
