Kho Kho Players to Join PM Modi at Independence Day Celebrations for the First Time

New Delhi, August 14, 2025: For the first time in history, Kho Kho players will participate in the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The invitation comes after India’s victory in the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup held in January 2025 in New Delhi. This move reflects the government’s push to promote indigenous sports, with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya advocating for Kho Kho’s inclusion in future Asian Games and the 2036 Olympics, marking a century since its 1936 Olympic demonstration.

Out of the 30 players invited, 15 will also feature in the player draft of Ultimate Kho Kho (UKK) Season 3 starting November 29. Since 2022, UKK, in collaboration with the Kho Kho Federation of India, has transformed the sport with a modern, fast-paced format, professional training, and national broadcasts. This season will welcome international players for the first time, signalling Kho Kho’s growing global presence.

World Cup-winning captain Pratik Waikar expressed his pride, calling the Red Fort invitation a “historic honour” for the sport. Alongside Waikar, stars like Ramji Kashyap, Sachin Bhargo, Suyash Gargate, and others will be recognised. With its speed, strategy, and deep cultural roots, Kho Kho is evolving into a professional sport with international ambitions and a strong case for Olympic recognition.
