New Delhi, February 19, 2026: Registrations for the 13th edition of the Ladakh Marathon, the world’s highest AIMS-certified marathon, are now open. Scheduled from September 10 to 13 in Leh, the event will once again test runners against Ladakh’s extreme altitude and rugged Himalayan terrain.
The 2026 edition will feature six races: Silk Route Ultra (122km), Khardung La Challenge (72km), Full Marathon (42km), Half Marathon (21km), 11.2km Run, and 5km Run for Fun. Age eligibility begins at 12 years for the 5km, while participants must be at least 24 years old for the 122km ultra. All timed races require prior qualifying performances within a specified period.
The two ultra events remain application-based and strictly capped. The Khardung La Challenge climbs to 17,618 feet, demanding proven endurance credentials, document verification, and mandatory medical clearance. Ultra runners must arrive in Leh at least 10 days before race day for compulsory acclimatisation.
Founded in 2012 after the 2010 Ladakh flash floods, the marathon has grown into one of India’s most distinctive endurance events. In 2025, it recorded participation from all 36 States and Union Territories.
Organised by the High Altitude Sports Foundation, the event also emphasises sustainability. Single-use plastics have been phased out, with runners carrying hydration packs and using biodegradable cups. Guided by the motto “Leave Only Footprints Behind,” the marathon continues to promote responsible racing at high altitude.
