Manchester, 23 July 2025 – India’s hopes took a serious hit on Day 2 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford after wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt following a painful injury.
Pant, who was batting confidently on 37 runs, inside-edged an attempted reverse sweep off England’s Chris Woakes onto his right foot. Though he survived an LBW appeal and a DRS review, Pant was clearly in severe pain, unable to put any weight on his injured foot.
The swelling was immediate and significant, forcing Pant to leave the field on the back of a golf-style buggy. Concern quickly spread among fans and teammates, given Pant’s importance to India’s middle order.
Shortly after the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared an official update on social media platform X (formerly Twitter):
🏏 Update on Rishabh Pant
Rishabh Pant has been taken for scans after sustaining a blow on his right foot while batting. The medical team is monitoring his progress. Further updates will follow. #TeamIndia | #ENGvIND
Pant’s injury has come at a critical phase of the series, with India trailing and relying heavily on his aggressive batting. His availability for the remainder of the Test – and possibly the fifth and final match – now remains uncertain.
India’s team management and fans alike will be hoping for encouraging scan results and a swift recovery for one of their most dynamic players.
