In a landmark move in the Indian Premier League, a consortium led by US-based entrepreneur Kal Somani has acquired the Rajasthan Royals for a staggering $1.63 billion. The deal marks one of the biggest franchise sales in IPL history, highlighting the league’s growing global value.
Somani, known for his strong presence in the tech industry, is the founder of companies like IntraEdge, Truyo, and Academian. His consortium is backed by prominent names, including Walmart heir Rob Walton and the Hamp family, who are major stakeholders in the NFL team Detroit Lions.
The acquisition comes after months of negotiations, with the previous owners exploring a complete sale of the franchise. Somani had earlier expressed interest in expanding his footprint in sports, and this deal represents a major step in that direction.
Beyond cricket, Somani has also invested in sports ventures like Motor City Golf Club and TMRW Sports, co-founded by legends like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
The Rajasthan Royals, one of the original IPL franchises, have seen a massive surge in valuation over the years. This high-profile takeover is expected to bring fresh investment, innovation, and global attention to the team.
With IPL 2026 around the corner, all eyes will be on how the new ownership shapes the future of the Royals both on and off the field.
