New York, July 6: Erling Haaland produced a match-winning performance as Norway stunned five-time champions Brazil 2-1 to book a historic place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals at MetLife Stadium.
The Manchester City striker scored twice in the closing stages of the match, helping Norway reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time in the nation’s history. Goalkeeper Orjan Nyland was equally influential, making a string of outstanding saves, including a first-half penalty stop from Bruno Guimaraes, to keep Brazil at bay.
Brazil dominated large spells of the contest and created several clear opportunities, but Nyland’s heroics frustrated the South American giants throughout the evening. Norway finally broke the deadlock in the 79th minute when Haaland powered home a towering header from Andreas Schjelderup’s cross. The prolific striker sealed the victory in the 90th minute with a clinical low finish from the edge of the penalty area.
Brazil managed to pull one goal back deep into stoppage time after Neymar converted a penalty, but it proved too little, too late. The defeat marks Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit since 1990 and extends their run of eliminations by European opponents to six consecutive tournaments.
Haaland’s brace also took his tournament tally to seven goals, drawing level with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot. Norway will now face the winner of the Round of 16 clash between England and Mexico in the quarter-finals, while Brazil’s long wait for another World Cup title continues.
