Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have officially ended their 18-year association with head coach Stephen Fleming after both parties mutually agreed to part ways following discussions with the franchise management.
Fleming joined CSK as a player in the inaugural IPL season in 2008 before taking over as head coach in 2009. Under his leadership, CSK became one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, winning five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies. The team also reached the playoffs a record 12 times and played in 10 IPL finals.
However, CSK’s performances have declined in recent seasons. After winning the IPL title in 2023, the franchise finished fifth in 2024, last in 2025, and eighth in the 2026 season, leading to a change in direction.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath thanked Fleming for his immense contribution, describing him as the “heartbeat” of the franchise’s coaching unit for nearly two decades. Managing Director KS Viswanathan also praised Fleming for building a culture based on consistency, humility and teamwork.
Reflecting on his departure, Fleming called his time with CSK the greatest privilege of his coaching career. He said he leaves with gratitude and pride for everything the team achieved together, adding that CSK will always hold a special place in his heart.
Fleming also coached the Super Kings franchises in SA20 and Major League Cricket during his tenure, making his departure the end of a remarkable era for the Super Kings family.
