Gyaneshwari Yadav Wins Silver in Women’s 53kg Weightlifting at CWG 2026

Glasgow, July 27: India’s medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games received another boost as Gyaneshwari Yadav secured the silver medal in the women’s 53kg weightlifting event on Monday. The 23-year-old lifter finished with a combined total of 199kg, lifting 88kg in the snatch and 111kg in the clean and jerk.

Yadav delivered a composed performance throughout the competition. She successfully cleared all three snatch attempts—82kg, 85kg and 88kg—to stay in contention for the top spot. In the clean and jerk, she lifted 103kg and 107kg before producing a strong final lift of 111kg, which confirmed the silver medal.

Nigeria’s Onome Didih claimed the gold medal after finishing ahead of the Indian lifter, while Rebeka Groulx of Canada settled for bronze with a total lift of 178kg.

The silver medal marked India’s fifth medal at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and continued the country’s impressive run in weightlifting. Earlier in the Games, Olympic champion Mirabai Chanu won her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold, while Rishikanta Singh and Raja Muthupandi also added silver medals to India’s tally.

Gyaneshwari has emerged as one of India’s leading weightlifters in recent years. She won a bronze medal at the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championships and a gold medal at the Universal Weightlifting Cup 2026, highlighting her consistent rise on the international stage.

Despite a reduced weightlifting squad due to doping-related suspensions, Indian lifters have continued to deliver strong performances, keeping the nation among the leading medal contenders in the sport at the Commonwealth Games.
