Glasgow, July 28: Indian para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar scripted history by winning the gold medal in the women’s Shot Put F57 event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. She registered a season-best throw of 9.81 metres, becoming India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games para-athletics gold medallist. Her remarkable achievement also ended India’s 20-year wait for a para-athletics medal at the Games.
India enjoyed another successful day in Glasgow with Sarvesh Kushare securing the silver medal in the men’s high jump. Kushare cleared 2.25 metres before three unsuccessful attempts at 2.28m, finishing behind Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford, who claimed the gold.
In weightlifting, Valluri Ajaya Babu and Gyaneshwari Yadav added two more silver medals to India’s tally. Ajaya Babu narrowly missed the gold in the men’s 79kg category, finishing just 1kg behind Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry Hidayat. Earlier, Gyaneshwari impressed on her Commonwealth Games debut by winning silver in the women’s 53kg event.
India also received a bronze medal through Shilpa Shyla in the women’s Shot Put F57 after a successful post-event protest led to Nigeria’s Eucharia Iyiazi being stripped of a valid mark.
Meanwhile, boxer Lovlina Borgohain is assured of a medal after receiving a quarter-final bye in the women’s 75kg category.
With these outstanding performances, India’s medal tally rose to 10, including 2 gold, 5 silver and 3 bronze medals, reflecting a strong start to the country’s Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow.
