India enjoyed a memorable day in judo at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with Yamini Mourya, Harsh Singh and Asmita Dey advancing to the finals of their respective weight categories and guaranteeing the country at least three silver medals.
In the women’s -57kg semifinal, Yamini Mourya produced a dominant performance, defeating South Africa’s Donne Breytenbach by Ippon in just 1 minute and 38 seconds. She capitalised on her opponent’s failed attack before securing a decisive pin to storm into the gold-medal bout.
Harsh Singh also booked his place in the men’s -60kg final with a composed display. He defeated his semifinal opponent by Waza-ari, staying in control throughout the contest to ensure India another medal and a chance to compete for gold.
In the women’s -48kg category, Asmita Dey battled past Scotland’s Summer Shaw in a tense semifinal. After the match remained scoreless in regulation time, Asmita delivered a decisive side throw during golden score, earning a Yuko to seal victory and secure her place in the final.
India’s medal hopes, however, suffered setbacks in other categories. Shraddha Chopade bowed out of the women’s -52kg repechage after a 0-1 defeat to Wales’ Lola Hodson, while Rohit Majgul exited the men’s -66kg competition after losing 1-2 to England’s Michael Fryer in the repechage.
With three judokas now set to fight for gold, India wrapped up an impressive opening day of judo competition and will look to convert the guaranteed medals into Commonwealth Games titles.
