India’s FIH Hockey Men’s World Cup 2026 campaign faces a crucial test against arch-rivals Pakistan on Wednesday, August 19, following their defeat to England in the previous match.

Former India captain and goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, speaking to JioStar, said India have evolved significantly over the years and suggested that matches against Pakistan are no longer as difficult as they once were.

“Matches against Pakistan are not as tough as they used to be,” Sreejesh said, pointing to India’s improvements in fitness, strength, game awareness and decision-making.

Sreejesh also discussed India’s new formation and defensive approach. He stressed the need for the team to remain compact against European sides while avoiding dropping too deep. He urged India to step out, press high and defend aggressively, even beyond the centre line.

On captain Harmanpreet Singh, Sreejesh praised his leadership and highlighted the importance of a captain’s role off the field. He said Harmanpreet’s key responsibilities include keeping the squad united, supporting younger players, maintaining a positive environment and ensuring players understand the coach’s instructions.

Reflecting on India’s past struggles, Sreejesh said conceding late goals was once a major concern, but the team has now developed the ability to score in the final stages and win matches.

He acknowledged Pakistan’s potential but felt their current level is not the same as in previous years, when India-Pakistan encounters were often decided by narrow 1-0 or 2-1 margins.

India vs Pakistan will be played on August 19 from 6:30 PM IST and will be streamed live on JioHotstar, with television coverage on Star Sports.
