FIFA has imposed suspensions and fines on players and officials following the post-match confrontation between Argentina and Spain after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes received the most severe punishment, with FIFA handing him a 10-match suspension. Defender Nahuel Molina was banned for seven games, while Thiago Almada received a one-match suspension.
Spain midfielder Gavi was also sanctioned with a one-match ban after being found guilty of unsporting behaviour.
The disciplinary action relates to an altercation that broke out after Spain defeated Argentina in the final. Paredes and Molina were both found responsible for assault-related offences and were each fined $90,000.
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was handed a three-match suspension and fined $30,000 for his involvement. Almada and Gavi were also fined $30,000 each.
FIFA additionally penalised the Argentine Football Association (AFA), imposing total fines of around $321,000 for several disciplinary violations during the tournament. The federation was also ordered to restrict attendance to 50 per cent capacity for Argentina’s next two home matches.
The sanctions add to the fallout from a heated World Cup final that saw tensions continue after the final whistle. FIFA’s disciplinary committee has now formally addressed the incidents involving players, coaching staff and the Argentine federation.
The bans could have a significant impact on Argentina’s squad as the team begins its post-World Cup international schedule.
