England’s Joe Root produced a memorable double milestone during the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley, rewriting the record books with his fielding and batting achievements.
Root became the most successful outfielder in Test cricket after taking his 219th catch. He reached the landmark by holding on to a chance from Pakistan opener Azan Awais off Jofra Archer’s bowling during Pakistan’s second innings.
The dismissal moved Root past Australia’s Steve Smith, who previously held the record with 218 catches. India’s Rahul Dravid is third on the list with 210 catches, followed by Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene with 205 and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis with 200.
Root had already reached another significant milestone earlier in the match. His 66-run knock on the second day included his 68th Test half-century, taking him level with Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar for the most 50-plus scores in Test cricket.
West Indies legend Shivnarine Chanderpaul is next on the list with 66 such scores.
Root’s achievements came as England established a commanding position against Pakistan. England were bowled out for 409 after contributions from Jordan Cox, Root, Harry Brook and Dan Lawrence, all of whom scored half-centuries.
The hosts had earlier dismissed Pakistan for 171, giving England a substantial 238-run first-innings advantage.
Root’s latest records add another chapter to an already remarkable Test career, underlining his consistency both with the bat and in the field.
