Australia bounced back strongly from their first-Test defeat, thrashing Bangladesh by an innings and 51 runs in the second Test at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay on Sunday. The victory levelled the two-match series 1-1.
Bangladesh were in a strong position earlier after pacer Shoriful Islam produced a historic seven-wicket haul. Shoriful finished with 7-48, the best innings figures by a Bangladesh bowler in an away Test, as Australia were bowled out for 210 in their first innings.
Cameron Green top-scored for Australia with 67, while Nathan Lyon remained unbeaten on 32. Shoriful removed Green with a superb in-swinging yorker before Australia’s last-wicket pair added 24 crucial runs.
However, Bangladesh’s second innings quickly collapsed under Australia’s pace attack. Mitchell Starc struck twice in the third over, dismissing Shadman Islam for one and Mominul Haque for a duck. Captain Pat Cummins then removed Tanzid Hasan for nine, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 39 for three.
Starc continued his impressive spell to finish with four wickets for 39 runs, while Cummins claimed three for just 10 runs. Lyon also took three wickets for 25 runs.
Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for just 95 in 38.3 overs. Mushfiqur Rahim was unbeaten on 29, but had little support as Australia completed a dominant turnaround after their nine-wicket defeat in Darwin.
