Padikkal’s Twin Tons Strengthen His Case for India’s No. 3 Spot

Devdutt Padikkal is rapidly establishing himself as a dependable option at No. 3 for India after producing back-to-back centuries against Sri Lanka.

The left-handed batter followed his impressive 167 in the first Test at Galle with another composed hundred (117) at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo on Sunday. The century came in only his sixth Test innings and further strengthened his credentials as a long-term solution in India’s top order.

Padikkal reached his century from 168 balls, striking 10 boundaries during an innings built around patience, control and solid shot selection. After reaching the landmark, he removed his helmet and acknowledged the applause from his teammates and the Indian dressing room.

His 167 in Galle had already marked him out as one of India’s promising young Test batters. Backing that performance up with another hundred in the following match has now given him valuable momentum at the international level.

Padikkal’s consistency is particularly significant as India continue to assess their batting combination in Test cricket. His ability to bat confidently at No. 3 provides stability between the openers and the middle order.

The century also came on a challenging first day for India, with both openers departing during the morning session. Padikkal’s ability to absorb pressure and build a substantial innings could prove crucial as India look to strengthen their position in the second Test.

With two centuries in successive Tests, Padikkal is making a strong statement that he can be a long-term fixture in India’s Test XI.
