Sri Lanka fast bowler Asitha Fernando and India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal have each been fined 25 per cent of their match fees for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the first day of the second Test in Colombo on Sunday.

The duo was found guilty of breaching Article 2.12, which relates to inappropriate physical contact with a player, match official or any other person during an international match.

The incident occurred after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal in the 17th over of India’s first innings. Jaiswal walked towards the Sri Lankan pacer and exchanged words with him. Fernando then moved his head towards Jaiswal, who responded by leaning in, resulting in the two players making head contact.

Both players admitted the offence and accepted the sanctions proposed by ICC Elite Panel Match Referee Andy Pycroft, meaning no formal hearing was required.

In addition to the financial penalty, one demerit point has been added to each player’s disciplinary record. Neither Fernando nor Jaiswal had committed an offence in the previous 24 months.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella.

Level 1 breaches carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a maximum fine of 50 per cent of the match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
