Argentina have come under fire following their 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, with several football pundits criticising the team’s conduct during the post-match medal ceremony.
After collecting their silver medals, Argentina’s players, including captain Lionel Messi, reportedly walked away to the far side of the pitch instead of staying to applaud Spain as the newly crowned champions lifted the World Cup trophy. The move drew criticism as Spain had applauded Argentina during the runners-up medal presentation.
The controversy continued when Spain captain Rodri received the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s best player. Argentina supporters inside the stadium chanted Messi’s name during the presentation, overshadowing Rodri’s moment.
TalkSPORT broadcaster Adrian Durham described Argentina’s behaviour as “classless” and said the players and some supporters had failed to accept defeat. He also criticised Argentina’s overall campaign, claiming the defending champions had benefited from favourable circumstances throughout the tournament.
Tensions had already escalated on the field after the final whistle. Midfielder Leandro Paredes was shown a red card following an altercation involving Spain’s Eric Garcia and Gavi, while Enzo Fernandez had earlier been sent off in stoppage time after receiving a second yellow card.
Spain sealed their second FIFA World Cup title with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute of extra time after a goalless 90 minutes. The victory also extended Spain’s unbeaten run to a European-record 38 matches, while ending Argentina’s hopes of becoming the first team in 64 years to successfully defend the World Cup title.
