Argentina produced a stunning upset in the Women’s Hockey World Cup final, defeating hosts and defending champions the Netherlands 3-1 in a shootout after the match ended 1-1 in Amstelveen.

The Netherlands entered the final chasing a fourth consecutive World Cup title and looked on course to continue their dominance. Star forward Yibbi Jansen gave the hosts the lead in the 30th minute, scoring her eighth goal of the tournament.

Argentina refused to surrender and gradually increased the pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 54th minute when Maria Granatto found the equaliser, sending the high-pressure final into a shootout.

Argentina held their nerve when it mattered most, winning the shootout 3-1 to claim their third Women’s Hockey World Cup crown. The triumph was their first world title since 2010 and also provided redemption after their defeat to the Netherlands in the previous World Cup final four years ago.

For the Dutch, the defeat ended their hopes of making history with four successive World Cup championships. Playing in front of their home supporters, the Netherlands were unable to convert their advantage into another title.

The tournament also saw Belgium secure a place on the podium. Belgium defeated Australia 1-0 in the bronze-medal match, with Charlotte Englebert scoring the decisive goal.

The result gave Belgium their first Women’s Hockey World Cup bronze medal since 1978, adding another significant achievement to an eventful tournament.

Argentina’s victory capped a dramatic final and once again underlined the unpredictable nature of international hockey, with the defending champions unable to complete their historic title run.
