England produced a dominant performance to defeat Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in the first Test at home, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
After posting 409 in their first innings, England’s bowlers dismantled Pakistan twice in just three days. Pakistan were bowled out for 171 in their first innings, conceding a massive 238-run deficit, before collapsing for 135 in their second innings.
Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue led England’s impressive bowling attack. Robinson finished with eight wickets in the match and was named Player of the Match, while Tongue delivered a decisive spell after lunch, claiming three wickets in six balls to push Pakistan towards defeat.
Jofra Archer also played a key role, taking the final wicket to complete England’s emphatic victory. Archer removed both Pakistan openers cheaply earlier in the innings and consistently troubled the batting line-up.
England captain Joe Root praised his team’s maturity and consistency, particularly their ability to exploit the conditions with the ball while also building a strong first-innings total.
Pakistan stand-in captain Salman Ali Agha admitted that England had outplayed his side in every department. He said Pakistan lacked consistency with both bat and ball and promised a stronger response in the next Test.
The second Test will be played at Lord’s, with Pakistan aiming to level the series and England looking to extend their advantage.
