Jakarta, June 2: India’s star shuttler PV Sindhu made a winning start to her Indonesia Open 2026 campaign, while the men’s doubles pair of Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun also advanced to the second round with impressive victories on Tuesday.
Recently returning to the world’s top 10 rankings for the first time since 2023, Sindhu continued her dominance over Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan, securing a hard-fought 25-23, 21-16 victory at the Istora Senayan Stadium. The win marked Sindhu’s 11th consecutive triumph over the Thai shuttler and improved her overall head-to-head record against Busanan to a remarkable 21-1.
The two-time Olympic medallist will now face a much tougher challenge in the next round, where she is set to meet the winner of the clash between top seed An Se Young of South Korea and Turkey’s Neslihan Arin.
In men’s doubles, the Indian duo of Hariharan and Arjun produced a commanding performance to defeat Malaysia’s experienced pair of Tan Wee Kiong and Nur Mohd Azriyn 21-18, 21-10. The match lasted just 33 minutes as the Indians dominated proceedings, particularly in the second game.
However, it was disappointment for India in men’s singles as Lakshya Sen bowed out in the opening round. The former Commonwealth Games champion lost 21-19, 21-16 to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan, who arrived in strong form after stunning World No. 1 Shi Yu Qi at last week’s Singapore Open.
With Sindhu and the Arjun-Hariharan pair progressing, India’s challenge remains alive at the prestigious Super 1000 event.
