Dallas: Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals after securing a dramatic 2-1 victory over Belgium, thanks to a late winner from substitute Mikel Merino.
The match appeared destined for extra time before Merino, who had only recently come off the bench, capitalised on a rebound in the 88th minute to score the decisive goal. The midfielder had also netted a late winner in Spain’s previous knockout match, continuing his reputation as a game-changing substitute.
Spain took the lead in the 30th minute when Fabián Ruiz converted from close range after Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois blocked Dani Olmo’s initial effort. Belgium responded before half-time as Charles De Ketelaere headed home from a Timothy Castagne cross to level the contest.
Belgium suffered a major setback in the second half when Courtois was forced off with a thigh injury, prompting a goalkeeping change. Spain continued to press for a winner and eventually found the breakthrough late in the match.
Belgium pushed forward in stoppage time in search of an equaliser, but Spain’s defence stood firm to seal the victory.
The result extends Spain’s impressive unbeaten run to 37 matches and sends them into a highly anticipated semi-final clash against France. Belgium, meanwhile, bowed out of the tournament after a spirited performance that saw their 18-match unbeaten streak come to an end.
Spain will now look to continue their title charge as they prepare for one of the biggest matches of the tournament against France.
