Jakarta, June 3: India’s young badminton stars enjoyed a successful day at the Indonesia Open 2026, with Ayush Shetty and the mixed doubles pair of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani advancing to the pre-quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Former World Junior Championship bronze medallist Ayush produced a remarkable comeback to defeat China’s Weng Hong Yang 8-21, 22-20, 21-15 in a thrilling men’s singles clash. After being outplayed in the opening game, the Indian fought back strongly in the second, saving a game point at 19-20 before winning three consecutive points to force a decider.
The Thomas Cup bronze medallist then dominated the third game, building a healthy lead and sealing victory in one hour and six minutes. It was Ayush’s second consecutive win over world No.15 Weng, having also beaten him during the Thomas Cup 2026 earlier this year. He will next face Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu.
In mixed doubles, Rohan and Ruthvika delivered an impressive performance to upset world No.20 pair Yang Po-Hsuan and Hu Ling Fang 21-14, 21-14 in just 34 minutes. The Indian duo now face defending champions Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue in the next round.
India’s campaign continues on Thursday with PV Sindhu set for a blockbuster clash against An Se-young.
