Mumbai, June 7, 2026: India batting legend Rohit Sharma has expressed confidence in newly-appointed India T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, saying the Mumbai star is well-equipped to succeed in the leadership role.
Speaking during the Nuvama Private T20 Mumbai League 2026, Rohit praised Mumbai’s competitive cricket culture for shaping strong leaders. His comments came after Shreyas celebrated his appointment as India’s T20I captain with a match-winning 61 off 36 balls for SOBO Mumbai Falcons against Triumph Knights Mumbai North East at the Wankhede Stadium.
Rohit highlighted the journeys of Mumbai cricketers who have overcome challenges to lead India, citing both Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer as examples of determination and resilience. He said Shreyas’ experience leading teams in domestic and franchise cricket would help him enjoy success at the international level.
The former India captain also lauded the T20 Mumbai League for providing a valuable platform for young cricketers to showcase their talent and attract the attention of IPL franchises. He credited Mumbai Cricket Association President Ajinkya Naik and his team for successfully organizing the tournament despite the challenges of hosting it immediately after the IPL season.
The men’s and women’s league finals are scheduled to be played on June 13 at the Wankhede Stadium.
