Danni Wyatt-Hodge produced a stunning unbeaten century as England began their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a dominant 87-run victory over Sri Lanka at Edgbaston.
England posted a massive 219 for one after electing to bat first, with Wyatt-Hodge leading the charge. The experienced opener smashed 105 not out off just 62 balls, including 14 boundaries and a six, to register only the seventh century in Women’s T20 World Cup history.
She formed a brilliant opening partnership with Amy Jones, who scored a quick 53 off 38 balls. The duo added 135 runs for the first wicket before Jones was dismissed. England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt then continued the momentum with a blistering unbeaten 46 from 22 deliveries, helping England reach a huge total.
Sri Lanka’s chase never gained momentum as England’s bowlers kept pressure throughout. Lauren Bell provided the early breakthrough, while Charlie Dean and Freya Kemp troubled the batting line-up. Kemp was the star with the ball, taking four wickets for 22 runs, including three wickets in four balls during a superb spell.
Nilakshika Silva top-scored for Sri Lanka with 39, while Harshitha Samarawickrama contributed 29, but the team was bowled out for 132 in 20 overs.
The victory puts England at the top of Group B early in the tournament. England will next face Ireland, while Sri Lanka look to recover against New Zealand.
