Atlanta, July 15: Argentina produced another stunning late comeback to defeat England 2-1 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final, where they will face Spain in a blockbuster title clash.
After a goalless first half dominated by physical battles, England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, who finished off a cross from Morgan Rogers. The Three Lions then shifted to a defensive approach, allowing Argentina to control possession and pile on the pressure.
The defending champions finally found the breakthrough in the 85th minute when Enzo Fernández headed home from Lionel Messi’s delivery to level the scores. Deep into stoppage time, Messi once again turned provider, collecting the rebound before delivering a pinpoint cross for Lautaro Martínez, who headed in the winner to complete Argentina’s remarkable comeback.
Although Messi did not score, the 39-year-old captain assisted both goals and played a decisive role in sending Argentina into a second consecutive World Cup final. The victory also keeps Argentina on course to become the first nation since Brazil (1958 and 1962) to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles.
England, who were aiming to reach their first World Cup final since lifting the trophy in 1966, were left heartbroken despite an impressive defensive display for much of the contest.
Argentina will now take on Spain in Sunday’s final, while England’s wait for another World Cup title continues.
