Mumbai, July 30: Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane on Thursday announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket, bringing an end to a distinguished career spanning over a decade.
The 38-year-old represented India in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs and 20 T20Is, scoring 5,077 Test runs, including 12 centuries, along with 2,962 ODI runs and 375 T20I runs. Rahane last played for India during the 2023 Test series against the West Indies.
In a heartfelt social media post, Rahane said the time was right to move on, adding that every journey has a beginning and an end. He thanked fans, teammates, coaches and family for supporting him throughout his career.
Rahane’s finest moment came in 2020-21, when he captained an injury-hit Indian side to a historic 2-1 Test series victory over Australia after regular skipper Virat Kohli returned home. His calm leadership and match-winning century at Melbourne remain among the most memorable moments in Indian cricket.
One of his final major international performances came in the 2023 ICC World Test Championship Final, where he top-scored with 89 in the first innings against Australia.
Despite retiring from international cricket, Rahane will continue playing domestic cricket and remain associated with the sport through commentary and mentoring. He recently led Mumbai to the 2023-24 Ranji Trophy title, their record-extending 42nd championship.
Rahane’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious international career built on resilience, consistency and exemplary leadership.
