Mumbai, August 21, 2026: The second round of the Asian Junior Open and Girls Classical Chess Championships witnessed several upsets at the ITC Maratha Sheraton, Mumbai.
In the Open section, Guru Prakash, rated 2113, produced the biggest upset by defeating recently crowned Asian Junior Rapid Champion FM Vivaan Vishal Shah (2339). Manav Kumar also impressed by overcoming higher-rated FM Arun Kataria. Hardik Shah held Turkmenistan’s FM Amanmuhammet Hommadov to a draw, while Mehul Sondhi shared the point with FM Madhvendra Pratap Sharma.
Top seed IM Mayank Chakraborty continued his strong start with a win over Vivaan Sardana to move to two points from two rounds. IM Artem Pingin, IM Apoorv Kamble and IM Aaditya Dhingra also secured victories to remain on perfect scores.
The Girls section saw further surprises, with Sunetra Dey holding higher-rated FM Prishita Gupta to a draw. Tripurambika V defeated WCM Anushka Bapu Kutwal, while Pranavasri S defeated Uzbekistan’s WFM Begmuratova Sarvinoz.
Top seed WFM Pratitee Bordoloi maintained her winning run to reach 2/2. Kazakhstan’s WFM Mariya Kholyavko and Turkmenistan’s WFM Shohradova Lala also remained unbeaten with perfect scores.
The championship is being organised by the Maharashtra Chess Association on behalf of the All India Chess Federation and the Asian Chess Federation.
