Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has identified fielding as the biggest concern for Indian cricket after the team’s 2-0 T20I series defeat to Ireland, saying dropped catches have become a recurring problem across all levels of the game.
Speaking on JioStar’s Googlies, Patel said India could have restricted Ireland to lower totals had they held their catches. He also urged selectors to develop specialist T20 bowlers instead of relying on the return of senior pacers, suggesting that bowlers suited specifically for the shortest format should be backed.
Patel also expressed hope that vice-captain Tilak Varma regains form, warning against another leadership-related omission. He added that India’s batting line-up needs better right-left balance, with too many left-handers currently occupying the top order.
Meanwhile, former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar praised Rohit Sharma’s leadership, recalling how the former captain always accepted responsibility after defeats instead of blaming teammates. Nayar said Rohit played a crucial role in maintaining a positive dressing-room atmosphere by supporting players going through difficult phases.
According to Nayar, Rohit’s honest communication and genuine concern for teammates earned him the trust of the squad. He cited instances where Rohit personally spoke to players who were left out, ensuring they felt valued despite disappointment.
