Kohli Set to Miss Afghanistan ODIs as India Awaits Fitness Updates on Rohit and Hardik

India’s preparations for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan have received a setback, with star batter Virat Kohli expected to miss the entire series due to a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 final.

Although Kohli completed his innings despite experiencing discomfort, subsequent medical assessments reportedly advised him to take a minimum two-week break from competitive cricket. With the Afghanistan series beginning on June 13 and India having a busy international schedule ahead, selectors are unlikely to risk rushing him back into action.

His absence could open the door for players such as Devdutt Padikkal, Tilak Varma, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, or Rajat Patidar to earn opportunities in the middle order.

Meanwhile, uncertainty also surrounds the availability of senior players Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. Rohit has been recovering from a hamstring issue that affected his IPL campaign, while Hardik continues to be monitored for a recurring back problem.

Both players are expected to undergo fitness assessments before the final squad is confirmed. Their participation will depend on medical clearance from the team management and support staff.

If Rohit is unavailable, Yashasvi Jaiswal could be considered as a replacement opening option alongside captain Shubman Gill. The young left-hander remains highly regarded after impressive performances in recent ODI appearances.

India’s selectors are expected to finalize key decisions soon as they prepare for an important white-ball season, with the Afghanistan series serving as a crucial step towards upcoming international assignments.
