The captains of all five Lanka Premier League (LPL) franchises expressed confidence in the tournament’s continued growth during the official pre-season press conference ahead of the 2026 edition.
The tournament will be held from July 17 to August 8, with matches scheduled across Colombo, Dambulla, Kandy and Jaffna, marking the first time the competition will be played in four venues. Defending champions Jaffna Kings will face Galle Gallants in the opening match in Colombo.
LPL officials highlighted the league’s steady rise since its launch in 2020, noting its growing international appeal and its role in developing Sri Lankan cricket. This year’s player draft attracted more than 650 overseas registrations from 21 countries, reflecting increasing global interest in the tournament.
Jaffna Kings captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa described the LPL as a “truly global event,” saying local players benefit greatly from sharing the dressing room with experienced international cricketers. Kandy Royals skipper Angelo Mathews said the league provides an ideal platform for young Sri Lankan players to learn from overseas stars and prepare for higher levels of cricket.
Colombo Kaps captain Kusal Mendis praised the quality of the competition, calling it an important step in raising Sri Lanka’s cricketing standards. Dambulla Sixers captain Dinesh Chandimal emphasised the opportunities the tournament offers emerging players, while Galle Gallants skipper Dasun Shanaka said the league remains a celebration of Sri Lankan talent and a stage for the country’s unique style of cricket.
The 2026 season will feature a 20-match league phase followed by the playoffs, with the final scheduled for August 8 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
