Mexico Begin World Cup 2026 Campaign With Victory Over South Africa

Mexico made a winning start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa in their Group A opening match at Mexico City Stadium.

Julian Quinones was the star of the night, scoring the opening goal and playing a key role in creating the second. Mexico started aggressively and took the lead in the ninth minute when Quinones finished a chance from inside the box after Erik Lira won possession.

South Africa struggled to handle Mexico’s attacking pressure, but goalkeeper Ronwen Williams produced several important saves to keep the score close. He denied Raul Jimenez with a strong stop, while the post also came to South Africa’s rescue when Quinones hit the woodwork.

Mexico doubled their advantage in the 67th minute. After a South African red card reduced them to 10 players, Quinones combined with Jimenez before Roberto Alvarado delivered a dangerous cross that Jimenez headed into the net.

The match saw more drama late on, with both teams finishing the game with 10 players after red cards for Themba Zwane and Cesar Montes.

Mexico youngster Gilberto Mora also created history, becoming the sixth-youngest player to appear at a World Cup at the age of 17 years and 240 days.

Quinones was named the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match for his match-winning performance as Mexico collected three important points and moved to the top of Group A.
