The Premier League returns for the 2026/27 season with Arsenal beginning their title defence after ending the 2025/26 campaign as champions. The Gunners’ triumph made them the third different champions in three seasons, following Manchester City in 2023/24 and Liverpool in 2024/25.
The new campaign promises another fiercely competitive battle, with nine Premier League clubs set to compete in European competitions, including five in the UEFA Champions League. England earned an additional Champions League place after finishing top of UEFA’s coefficient rankings.
The 2025/26 season was defined by fine margins. A record 115 goals were scored in the 90th minute or later, while 142 matches—37.3% of all fixtures—were decided by a single goal.
Sunderland produced one of the standout stories after finishing seventh immediately following promotion, earning Europa League football. Bournemouth also secured European qualification for the first time after finishing sixth. West Ham United, meanwhile, were relegated despite collecting 39 points.
Three clubs return to the top flight this season. Coventry City won the Championship and are back in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years under Frank Lampard. Ipswich Town return after one season away and will be managed by Gary O’Neil, while Hull City secured promotion through a dramatic Play-Off Final victory over Middlesbrough.
The league also remains a global showcase of elite talent. Players from 67 countries featured last season, while 128 nationalities have been represented throughout Premier League history. Erling Haaland broke Alan Shearer’s record by reaching 100 Premier League goals in just 111 appearances, while Bruno Fernandes set a new single-season assists record with 21.
India remains one of the Premier League’s fastest-growing markets. Watch time across the JioStar network exceeded 9.04 billion minutes during 2025/26, while the league now has 144.5 million followers in India. Combined television and digital reach has increased 2.4 times over five years.
The opening round begins on Saturday, 22 August, with Arsenal hosting Coventry City, while Manchester United travel to Hull City. Liverpool visit Newcastle United on Sunday, with Chelsea beginning their campaign away at Fulham early on Tuesday, 25 August.
With Arsenal aiming for back-to-back titles and three ambitious promoted clubs entering the competition, the 2026/27 Premier League season is set for another compelling campaign.
