Sandhya Vishnoi, Akshara Win Silver; Avanshika and Taniya Claim Bronze at U17 World Wrestling Championships

India’s women wrestlers added four more medals to the country’s tally at the U17 World Wrestling Championships 2026 in Baku, Azerbaijan, winning two silver and two bronze medals in an impressive outing.

Sandhya Vishnoi secured the silver medal in the 46kg category after reaching the final with a series of strong performances. In the gold-medal bout, she went down 2-13 to Japan’s Kokona Makino, finishing as the runner-up.

India’s second silver came through Akshara in the 53kg division. The talented wrestler, who had earlier won bronze at the 2026 U17 Asian Championships, advanced to the final before losing 0-11 to Marlee J. Solomon of the United States.

In the 61kg category, Avanshika produced a composed display to defeat Kazakhstan’s Aruzhan Bakytnur 5-1, earning the bronze medal.

Another bronze was added by Taniya in the 69kg division. She dominated Poland’s Maja Wejchan, registering a convincing 12-2 victory to secure a place on the podium.

With four more medals from the women’s competition, India continued its strong campaign in Baku. The focus now shifts to the men’s freestyle events, where Indian wrestlers will compete in the 48kg, 55kg, 65kg, 80kg and 110kg categories as they aim to add to the nation’s medal haul.
