Seventeen-year-old Indian shuttler Tanvi Sharma scripted history by winning her maiden BWF World Tour Super 300 title at the Taipei Open, becoming the youngest champion across all categories in the tournament’s history.
Tanvi defeated Vietnam’s sixth seed Nguyen Thuy Linh 21-16, 21-16 in the women’s singles final, wrapping up the contest in just 36 minutes with an impressive all-round performance.
The Indian teenager dominated the opening game by racing to a 10-2 lead before closing it out 21-16. Although she fell behind 0-3 in the second game, Tanvi fought back brilliantly with aggressive attacking play, accurate cross-court winners and sharp placement to seal the match 21-16.
With the victory, Tanvi became only the second Indian woman to win the Taipei Open after Saina Nehwal, who lifted the title in 2008. Her triumph also ended India’s 17-year wait for a title at the tournament and marked the country’s third overall Taipei Open crown.
The title places Tanvi among an elite group of Indian women’s singles players to win a BWF Super 300 or higher-level event, joining Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu and Devika Sihag. She is also the third-youngest player in the world to capture a BWF Super 300 title.
After her historic achievement, Tanvi said she was delighted to win her first major title, adding that she focused on taking one match at a time and giving her best despite feeling nervous throughout the tournament.
