West Indies Create History as Greaves and Matthews Win ICC Player of the Month Awards

Dubai, August 18, 2026: West Indies players Justin Greaves and Hayley Matthews have created history by winning the ICC Player of the Month awards for July 2026, giving the Caribbean side both the men’s and women’s honours for the first time.

Greaves claimed his maiden ICC Player of the Month award after a series of impressive performances in Test cricket against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He was instrumental in helping West Indies secure a 1-0 series victory over Sri Lanka, producing a crucial 180 in the second Test at North Sound after Sri Lanka posted 549/9.

He then starred against Pakistan in Trinidad, taking five wickets for 27 runs and two for 12 in a 90-run victory, helping West Indies take the lead in the two-Test series.

Matthews, meanwhile, secured the women’s award for a record fifth time following her outstanding performances in the ICC Women’s Championship series against Ireland. She scored 265 runs at an average of 132.50, including centuries in the first two matches, while striking at 117.25.

The West Indies captain also contributed with the ball, claiming seven wickets at an average of 17.57 and an economy rate of 4.10 as her team completed a 3-0 series sweep.

Greaves and Matthews won ahead of strong competition, with Harry Brook and Tanzid Hasan shortlisted for the men’s award, while Nat Sciver-Brunt and Harshitha Samarawickrama were in contention for the women’s honour.

The West Indies became only the fifth team to win both monthly awards in the same month since the awards began in 2021.
