Deepti Sharma Scripts Record-Breaking Spell as India Crush Thailand by 94 Runs

India began their Women’s Asia Cup 2026 campaign in commanding fashion, defeating Thailand by 94 runs in their Group A opener in Dubai on Sunday.

After being asked to bat, India made a flying start, powered by an aggressive half-century from Shafali Verma. The opener scored 64 off 36 deliveries, striking eight fours and three sixes. Smriti Mandhana contributed 19, while Pratika Rawal added 22 on her T20I debut.

India appeared set for a huge total after reaching 100 in 10 overs. However, Thailand’s spinners staged a remarkable comeback. Suleeporn Laomi was the standout bowler, claiming 3/26, while Sunida Chaturongrattana took two wickets. India lost four wickets for just 21 runs and eventually finished on 159/9.

The total proved more than sufficient as Thailand struggled against India’s disciplined bowling attack. They were dismissed for only 65 in 16.1 overs.

Deepti Sharma delivered the biggest highlight of the match. Playing her 150th T20I, the veteran all-rounder took three wickets in seven deliveries without conceding a run. Her sensational spell took her career tally to 171 Women’s T20I wickets, making her the outright leading wicket-taker in the format.

Nandani Sharma also impressed with 3/18, while Shree Charani claimed 2/10.

India will next face Hong Kong on Thursday as they look to continue their strong start to the tournament.
