Mumbai, August 25: Samsung’s latest foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Flip8, could become more expensive in India as rising memory chip costs put pressure on smartphone prices, according to leading retailers.

The new Samsung foldables are currently priced between ₹1.25 lakh and ₹2.6 lakh. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra measures just 4.1mm when unfolded, making it Samsung’s thinnest Galaxy Z Fold, while the Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201 grams, the lightest Fold model yet.

The devices have received a strong response in India, with nearly 2.71 lakh consumers pre-ordering the three models within 72 hours of their launch, according to Samsung India.

Retailers believe the unprecedented demand for memory chips, a critical component in smartphones, could lead to further price increases. Samsung has said it has been absorbing a significant portion of the rising component costs to limit the impact on consumers.

JB Park, President and CEO of Samsung Southwest Asia, said the company’s cost burden in 2026 has been “humongous” despite keeping its price increase relatively lower than competitors.

Research firm Smart Analytics Global expects the Indian smartphone market to remain under pressure amid the global memory-price crisis. Existing smartphone models could see price increases, while upcoming devices may launch at higher prices.

Retailers also suggest that consumers planning to purchase smartphones or laptops may consider buying sooner rather than waiting for festive-season discounts, as rising memory costs could limit the scope for price reductions.

Samsung has also introduced long-tenure zero-cost EMI options for buyers of its latest foldable smartphones in India.
